Boldly tow
Pajero’s reputation for towing is well earned. The combination of engine, gearbox, massive brakes and traction systems results in a braked towing capacity of 3.3 tonnes.

This engine harnesses the leading edge of diesel technology. Fuel is delivered through a Direct Injection Common Rail system – the same system we use on our big commercial trucks. The Intercooled Turbo boosts the already large low-end torque and adds smoothness and power throughout the rev range. It makes light work of hauling a boat up a slippery ramp or launching you up to motorway speeds.
The figures sum it up: 150kW of power and a hefty 448Nm of torque. What’s surprising is that all this power comes from 3.2 litres - a higher output than many engines of much greater size.
The final word is the economy: just 9.2 litres per 100km.
The petrol version of Pajero also achieves exceptional power, but does it in a different way. The 3.8-litre MIVEC engine employs intelligent valve timing technology. This system ensures efficiency at low revs and uses increased air-flow for maximum power at higher revs. This engine spins out a jaw-dropping 184kW of power. It’s a step up of 23% in power from the previous engine; it’s also lighter. And just like the diesel, it achieves this with lower emissions and improved economy.
On paper, it’s certainly impressive. On the road, it’s responsive, fast and makes towing safe and solid.
The perfect gear box for these two power house engines is the INVECS II 5-speed automatic transmission. Not only does it let the engine work most effectively at any rev speed, it adapts your driving style. The Smart Logic system measures your use of the pedals and adapts its changes to suit how you drive. The result is smooth acceleration and a more predictable ride, which is very reassuring on uncertain surfaces.

All models of Pajero feature a raft of air bags as standard. There are front airbags for driver and passenger, as well as side and curtain airbag. With Pajero’s ride height and stiff body construction, the feeling of protection is very reassuring.
Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body design, or RISE, is what gives Pajero its remarkable strength. This means the occupant area keeps its shape in a collision and energy is transferred away. A stiffer body also means better handling.
The monocoque frame is a system we adapted from aircraft design. It’s a major factor in the vehicle's integrity and lowers the centre of gravity for better, safer cornering. The bonnet is made of lightweight aluminium for the same reason.
